If sales are down: start here

The quickest ways to cut costs, lower taxes and get cash or advice when business slows. All free to ask about.

Dates not to miss

The next due date for each, worked out from today.

  1. Sales tax returns

Due the 20th after each filing period (monthly, quarterly or annual). Brighton collects its own 3.75% separately from the state. The City dropped the on-time filing credit in 2026. If you sell little, ask both to file less often.

City of Brighton and Colorado Department of Revenue · Details ↗

  2. BURA façade grant deadline (confirm first)

A pre-application meeting is required at least two weeks before. BURA’s page also says the 2026 window is closed, so call 303-655-2150.

Brighton Urban Renewal Authority · Details ↗

  3. Paid family leave (FAMLI) premiums

Quarterly wage report and premiums. 2026 rate 0.88%. With 9 or fewer employees there is no employer share, but you still withhold and send in the 0.44% employee share.

Colorado FAMLI Division · Details ↗

  4. Property tax: first half due

Paying in two halves? The first half is due by this date to avoid interest. Or pay in full by April 30.

Adams County Treasurer · Details ↗

  5. Equipment declaration (DS 056)

List your business furniture and equipment. Equipment worth $56,000 or less is exempt in 2026 ($58,000 from 2027).

Adams County Assessor · Details ↗

  6. Property tax: full payment due

Paying the whole year at once? It’s due by this date to avoid interest.

Adams County Treasurer · Details ↗

  7. Last day to protest your property’s value

Homes and buildings: new values arrive around May 1 in odd years. Compare yours with similar properties and protest by this date. The value sets your property tax for two years.

Adams County Assessor · Details ↗

  8. Property tax: second half due

If you paid the first half by February 28, the second half is due by this date.

Adams County Treasurer · Details ↗

  9. Last day to protest your equipment value

If the Assessor’s value for your business equipment is wrong, protest by this date.

Adams County Assessor · Details ↗

  10. Appeal to the County Board of Equalization

If your protest to the Assessor was denied, petition the Board by this date with the Assessor’s decision and your evidence.

Adams County Board of Equalization · Details ↗

  11. Renew your Colorado sales tax license

State sales tax licenses expire December 31 of odd-numbered years. Renewal is $16 per location, online through Revenue Online.

Taxes: what changed and where you can save

Commercial property is taxed at 25% of value for 2026
Down from 27% in 2025, so the same building owes about 7% less in taxes paid in 2027. If you lease and your landlord passes property tax through, ask for the lower rate to show up in your charges.
Equipment under $56,000 is exempt
Furniture, fixtures and equipment worth $56,000 or less per county owe no property tax for 2026, rising to $58,000 in 2027. File the declaration by April 15 if the Assessor sends one, so you don’t get valued on a guess.
Claim the last equipment tax credit on your 2025 return
Colorado’s income tax credit for property tax paid on business equipment ends after tax year 2025. Make sure your preparer claims it on the 2025 return if you paid that tax.
File sales tax less often if you sell little
Brighton collects its own 3.75% and the state collects the rest, on separate returns. If you collect very little, ask both to move you to quarterly or annual filing.
Some federal breaks have ended
The Work Opportunity Tax Credit lapsed for hires after December 31, 2025, and the 179D energy-efficient building deduction ended for projects started after June 30, 2026. Plan with what is still available.
